A male inmate was found unresponsive while in custody at the San Joaquin County Jail. He passed away two days later.
On January 23, 2023 at approximately 4:50pm, a 46-year-old white male was found unresponsive in his cell. Guards attempted life-saving procedures while medical staff and emergency responders arrived to transport the man to San Joaquin County General Hospital. He was pronounced deceased two days later on January 25, 2023 at 2:43pm.

An investigation is in progress, as is protocol if an inmate dies while in custody. The inmate was being held in a solo cell in the Sheltered Housing Unit, and had been in custody since January 20, 2023, facing vandalism charges – PC 594(b)(1).
